OpenText is
inviting Waterloo students (as well as staff and faculty) to a really great
(really free) event this summer called Future
Forward. If you’re able to, you should take advantage.
The event,
which is akin to TedX, is designed to help post secondary students explore a
career path in Enterprise Software. Talks are followed up with access to
the Expo Hall floor, a fantastic networking opportunity including booths, pods,
and demos. They have several U of W speakers including President
Hamdullahpur and Larry Smith. Future Forward is part of OpenText’s annual
user conference. This year, it’s occurring at the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre on Thursday, July 13 (10am-5:30pm). There’s
even free travel from Waterloo (and back)! Not to mention:

Shopify Goes BIG | Mark Bergen, Shopify Plus
Mark tells
the story of how Shopify grew from an entrepreneur helping small companies, to
a big company helping both small companies, and with Shopify Plus, big
companies. Large merchants, as they start to build infrastructure, often lose
the ability to be flexible and remain entrepreneurial. Shopify Plus explores
the opportunity for large companies to act big, but remain fast and nimble.

Craig
explores “entrepreneurship” vs “intrepreneurship.” How are they similar?
How are they different? What are the strategies large organizations
use to decide which to use, and when? Drawing on his experience as
Director of Corporate Innovation at Communitech, Craig answers these questions
and describes what it takes to help big companies launch products like small
companies.

Piron will share how his Toronto-based startup DeepLearni.ng helped one of the

Piron will uncover the toolkit making deep learning transformations possible
for the world’s largest organizations.

Larry is a
Professor of Economics at the University of Waterloo, and an effective speaker
and storyteller. He has mentored many of his students on start-up
business management and career development. He is author of the book No Fears,
No Excuses: What You Need To Do To Have A Great Career. In this talk, he
outlines what it takes to understand and solve big problems, and challenges the
audience’s thinking on what it will take to have a great career solving them.
